I visited University of Chicago yesterday (the first spring day the city had seen!)–struck by two things admissions wanted to be sure we knew about: First, U of C wants you to get a job when you leave. Lots of talk about their career advancement office and how “we combat that perception about liberal arts.” After all, “How are you gonna get a job with a philosophy degree?” U of C, pre-professional? Well, not quite–there’s still heavy emphasis on the renowned Core. Oh, and that other misperception? “University of Chicago is NOT the place where fun comes to die!” They have clubs, hundreds, although out tour guide mentioning the Neuroscience Club was not perhaps the best way to rev up the high schoolers in the crowd. But one undergrad manning a club’s table, where t-shirts were being given away, did manage to get a message to our group: “Yeah, we’re nerdy. That’s cool here!”
