Frequently Asked Questions

Why Hire an Independent Educational Consultant (IEC)?

As college admissions grows ever more complex and the cost of higher education continues to soar, the importance of sound guidance in the college search process cannot be overstated. The fact is, the majority of high school counseling offices are under-staffed and over-worked, often waiting until the end of junior year in high school to begin working with students. An Independent Educational Consultant offers one-on-one individualized guidance to your student beginning at whatever phase of the process you choose to begin–often at the very beginning of high school.

As a member of  IECA (Independent Educational Consultants Association) and HECA (Higher Education Consultants Association), Julie adheres to professional ethics guidelines, travels regularly to colleges and universities to maintain current knowledge, and conducts research and interviews to identify the latest trends and sort out the news from the noise.

Which colleges have the best and newest programs in areas that interest you? Where are the best scholarship opportunities? What about the hidden gems that might end up being the perfect fit?

Julie’s number one priority is getting to know each individual student and fitting their interests, talents, strengths, hopes and dreams into the puzzle of college choices and the ever-tricky game of college admissions.  By formulating a detailed, customized four-year plan for each student, prioritizing needs, and managing expectations, Julie helps turn the college search into a more joyful, less stressful journey.

Higher education is just too great an investment in the future to leave to chance. Hiring an IEC is an investment worth making.

What is College Counseling

Refine coursework plans, testing schedules and extra curricular activities

Facilitate or improve teacher relationships, and ultimately select teachers for letters of recommendation.
IdentifyIdentify and recommend extracurricular and summer activities, as well as internship opportunities.
Plan for and prioritize college visits, including preparing for college interviews.
Keep your student on task to complete all components of the college application.
Brainstorm and provide feedback on personal statements and essays.
Evaluate offers of admission as well as develop a strategy for waitlist and deferral decisions.

When Do We Start?

Right away! Ninth grade is not too early–or even mid-eighth grade. Why? We make sure eighth-graders choose the right classes to set him/her on the path to the best four-year course of studies. It can also be important to hone in on areas where the student excels outside the classroom in order to shape a consistent extracurricular profile.

What Does it Cost?

Lakeside charges a flat fee, payable once a year, that does not change whether you begin freshman year or senior year. Hourly consultation fee rates may be available, depending on availability. Please contact me to set up an initial consultation–for which there is no charge.

What about tutoring for ACTs, SATs?

We know excellent people–and will work with you to find the right service or private tutor for your needs and specific learning style.

So How Much Work Do You Do Actually?

Glad you asked. The answer: A lot–and you’ve read about most of it elsewhere on our site. But there’s one thing we don’t do: Write your application essays. We interview, we brainstorm, we dig, we cajole, and we bring in the heavy artillery if necessary, but your student will do the work. Finding the college match is a process of discovery for the student–including his/her own essay(s). We expect the student to do a few other things for us as well: Participate in assigned questionnaires/evaluations, follow up after college visits; and attend all scheduled appointments.

What our Clients are Saying

{Julie was a blessing in the college application process with my youngest. My daughter didn’t want direction from me (go figure?) but was extremely open to working with Julie. They immediately hit it off and established a fantastic rapport. Julie’s advice and counsel went above and beyond what either of us expected. Perhaps most importantly having Julie in the mix gave my daughter a measure of control and a sounding board during what would have otherwise have been a very stressful process. I can t thank her enough.

{Julie, you were such a huge part of getting (our son) to the right school. The time, effort and genuine passion to want to help guide and direct him was apparent and appreciated.

{I felt Julie understood my daughter’s strengths, respected her point of view, and helped her to expand the direction of her essays and supplements. In the end, she was able to build an application which reflected her interests and aspirations. Thank you again.

{Julie broke down the college process with insightful campus observations and clarifying feedback. Talking to her gave me a much better understanding both of what colleges were looking for and what I was looking for in colleges.
5
{Julie made the college application process less stressful for me. She always replied quickly to the multitude of emails I sent her and kept me on track with my essays. I couldn’t thank her enough for the help she gave me and I highly recommend her to any incoming high school senior.

{Our daughter was helped immeasurably by Julie’s services. She has a unique rapport with teenagers and her admissions expertise is invaluable. Her guidance through the writing process was exceptional. Her value was finding the best approach and concepts for the essays and the guidance was such that our daughter’s writing was still her own but without the rough edges.

{I am a Senior at North Shore Country Day School and I’m interested in pursuing a degree in Theatrical Design and Technology. North Shore has great college counselors, but I felt that I needed someone with an arts expertise especially with helping me create my portfolio. Julie was an amazing help to me. She helped me create a list of eight perfect Theatre Design colleges for me. She worked with me for many hours creating a portfolio that I am very proud of, Julie helped me plan my approach to writing and edited the common app essay and it’s supplements, and she was very helpful with keeping me on track with the application deadlines. As of today, I have been accepted to seven of the eight schools that I applied to. I have received three scholarships which were portfolio-based. I really enjoyed working with Julie and I highly recommend her services.

{Thank you so much for helping me with my essays. I felt confident sending my final version out to colleges and I could not have done this without you. As you know, I’ll be attending DePaul University, which is my first choice.

{Julie was able to make great recommendations that we had not considered, and give additional advice we were not always able to get from the high school college counselor. I think that is because she has visited so many colleges and personally talked to admissions people at each school. She also understands a parent’s perspective, having raised two children who graduated from New Trier.

{Ms Hanna truly made the college application and selection process incredibly smooth. Her endless resources with regards to editing essays and organization led me to have more confidence in my application. I would recommend Ms Hanna to anyone.
